Wayland climate panel meets new town manager, defers trash-hauling study

WAYLAND — April 12, 2023 — Wayland's Energy and Climate Committee welcomed new Town Manager Michael McCall and the town's first Sustainability Manager Abigail Shute. Co-Chair Ellen Tohn said she and Co-Chair Ann Harris will meet with Shute biweekly to onboard her onto solar, ESCO and grant projects. Member Clovis Schaff asked the committee to endorse a $25,000-to-$30,000 feasibility study on replacing trips to the transfer station — used by about 1,500 households, down from 2,100 — with town-wide curbside hauling, citing roughly 260 metric tons of potential CO2 savings, but William Huss and Tom Sciacca declined to vote before hearing from the DPW. English teacher Sarah Snow said the high school's Black Earth composting program has received $7,000 from the Wayland Public Schools Foundation but needs a volunteer coordinator. The committee unanimously approved March 15 minutes and set May 10 as its first in-person meeting in roughly three years. Member Harvey Michaels will draft a motion supporting Sen. Michael Barrett's bill to restructure Mass Save.
