Wayland building department to launch online permitting by year-end

WAYLAND — June 14, 2024 — Wayland to put residential building permits online by year-end. The town's building commissioner told the Economic Development Committee on Friday that the roughly $60,000 OpenGov platform — already live for roofing, electrical, plumbing and HVAC — will expand to residential structural permits by the end of 2024 and commercial projects shortly after, with fire trained first and each department to follow. Applicants will be able to track which department is holding a project and schedule inspections online. Chair Rebecca M. Stanizzi said the committee will use the rollout, plus roughly 95 names from the department's annual occupancy-inspection list, to build a town-wide business database. The committee also workshopped a Route 20 zoning survey asking residents about fast food, drive-throughs and app-based pickup windows. "We can't have those things if we don't allow for this," member Karen Kelly said. April and May minutes were approved unanimously.
