Wayland building committee approves $95,000 change order as community center slips behind

WAYLAND — June 4, 2024 — Wayland community center construction is running two months late, with substantial completion pushed to Feb. 6, 2025. The Permanent Municipal Building Committee unanimously recommended Change Order No. 1 at $95,291.26 — covering a rerouted water service, a sanitary-sewer pump, a grease trap and a disputed $10,000 lighting substitution that members called the work of an industry "assaulting" the town. The panel also directed staff to ship roughly 450 cubic yards of contaminated topsoil to a Maine industrial-waste landfill at an estimated $130,000 rather than re-test in smaller piles, and to give the DPW an ultimatum on accepting a separate clean pile. Member Eric, citing a flat cost curve, said "nothing's moving" on site. On the library renovation, the committee stripped a full mechanical-system redesign from a $202,975 professional services package, saving roughly $20,000 by splitting the project into three bid packages.
