Wayland schools to roll out new non-discrimination protocol in September

WAYLAND — June 5, 2024 — Wayland schools unveil non-discrimination protocol and $65,000 in equity grants. The School Committee on June 5 received a detailed update from DEB coordinator Caroline Han, who secured a $50,000 state Hate Crime Prevention grant and a $15,000 racial integration and equity grant. The funds paid for all eighth-graders to attend Boston's Auschwitz exhibit, will underwrite K-5 curriculum work and a strengthened ninth-grade Holocaust unit, and will bring 12 hours of restorative-justice training from Suffolk University's Center for Restorative Justice to the district's administrative council this summer. The smaller grant funds a stipended school-based equity leader in every building. Assistant Superintendent Susan Bottan presented a draft non-discrimination protocol setting 24-hour timelines for staff reporting, family notification and investigator assignment. "Sometimes not dealing with the little things is what leads to the big things," Bottan said. Superintendent David Fleishman said the protocol takes effect in September.
