Wayland boards interview four of five School Committee candidates, defer vote

WAYLAND -- June 5, 2023, Wayland defers School Committee vacancy vote to hear absent military candidate. The Select Board and School Committee jointly interviewed four of five applicants Monday for a one-year seat, with finalist Craig Gruber unable to attend due to military duty. Former three-term member Jeanne Downs, National Grid director Sheethal Acharya, tax attorney Steven Glosky and parent Kenneth Helwig spoke; Select Board Chair William Whitney said deferring was only fair. Separately the board unanimously approved a $2,840,500 Fire Station 2 contract with Elizabeth Contracting Inc., including a $55,000 epoxy flooring alternate and $43,000 exterior repainting alternate, against a $3.3 million total project budget. Members also accepted a one-time COLA for roughly 245 Middlesex County retirees and authorized a $12,318 Regional Housing Services Office agreement. Town Manager Michael McCall floated a four-day, 40-hour summer workweek pilot.
