Wayland board reviews $17M to $29M water supply options as PFAS plant stays offline

WAYLAND — October 3, 2022 — Wayland weighs $17M-$29M water options as PFAS plant remains offline. The Board of Public Works on Oct. 3 reviewed five scenarios from consultant Kleinfelder, ranging from a $28.8 million local-only path requiring PFAS treatment at Baldwin Pond, Chamberlain and Happy Hollow, to a $17 million MWRA transmission main routed along the Hultman Aqueduct corridor. Project Manager Kirsten Ryan said EPA is expected to issue a near-zero enforceable PFAS limit as soon as December, meaning treatment "to non-detectable" at every source. The Happy Hollow plant remains inactive over disinfection problems and a failed gasket; August results showed 18 parts per trillion. Staff confirmed the MWRA board voted Sept. 14 to waive its entrance fee for five years, and a separate emergency Main Street connection is targeted for June 1, 2023.
