Wayland Board of Health to halt new work from backlogged septic designer

WAYLAND — September 16, 2024 — Wayland Board of Health moves to freeze new work from a septic designer with 18 missing as-builts. Health Director Julia Junghanns told the board Monday that one local engineer-installer has accumulated roughly 17 to 18 outstanding as-built certifications, some years overdue, despite state and local rules requiring filing within 30 days. Member Jonathan Storer pushed to reject new submissions outright: "When they submit something, we reject it and tell them we can't do any work in town until this is resolved." Staff had taken a "kind and gentle" approach and consulted DEP, which offered little guidance. The board also weighed an applicant's request for a temporary slate-and-wood tomb at 56 Orchard Lane tied to a previously approved home green burial, pending town counsel review. Wayland remains at moderate risk for West Nile and EEE.
