Wayland assessors approve $194,934 overlay ahead of classification hearing

WAYLAND — December 5, 2022 — Wayland assessors approve $194,934 FY23 overlay and clear November excise abatements. Meeting remotely Monday, Board of Assessors Chair Zachariah L. Ventress, Vice-Chair Philip David Parks and member Steven Klitgord voted 3-0 to set the overlay at $194,934.17, a figure Principal Assessor Rob said was drawn from a five-year average and pending Appellate Tax Board cases, with backstopping available from a $728,469.69 overlay surplus. "It is by design that we would be drawing down from the overlay surplus," Ventress said. The board also approved a second November batch of 27 motor vehicle excise abatements worth $2,849.85, bringing the month to 86 abatements totaling $13,105.03. Staff flagged roughly $109,000 in worst-case exposure across seven pending ATB cases, including an NSTAR Electric dispute carrying about $3.8 million in contested value.
