Recreation Commission backs $1.4 million in CPC requests for pool, playground

WAYLAND -- December 11, 2023, Wayland Recreation Commission endorses two CPC applications worth roughly $1.4 million. Commissioners on Monday voted to support a $401,000 request from the privately operated Wayland Community Pool for new showers, regraded locker-room floors, replacement of corroded plumbing the fire department says is "due to fail," a new handicap lift and new starting blocks, and on a 4-0 vote with one abstention backed a roughly $1 million foundation-led application to replace the Cochituate park playground with a fully accessible infinity-design structure. The pool, on town land under a 99-year lease, serves 275 to 325 people a day. Resident Dave Bernstein separately urged the commission to lead a 10-year athletic-fields capital plan before the town's artificial-turf moratorium expires in January 2025, telling members, "you are the stakeholders of athletic fields in Wayland." Staff said field-use fees brought in about $275,000 last year against a $200,000 target.
