Historical Commission backs two CPA applications, defers third

WAYLAND — November 4, 2024 — Wayland Historical Commission backs CPA bids for 1778 tax records and six rail trail posts. Meeting Nov. 4, the commission voted unanimously to file its own Community Preservation Act application to restore or recreate six concrete "rail rest posts" — destroyed by brush-clearing crews — at their original locations along the rail trail, with replacements quoted at roughly $4,000 each by SNF Concrete of Hudson. Members also unanimously endorsed a Board of Assessors application seeking $57,000 to have Northeast Document Conservation Center repair seven deteriorating valuation books, the oldest from 1778. Commissioner R. Richard Conard set aside a third application to stabilize the 1913 railroad water tank foundations after Structures North Consulting Engineers pegged that work at "not less than $150,000." Chair Bradford Carver also reported Stone's Bridge is splitting lengthwise, prompting engineers to specify high-strength fabric to bear the dirt load.
