WAYLAND — October 29, 2024 — Wayland Historic District Commission unanimously approves 16 Bow Road breezeway and carport project. Owner Tom Kern received a certificate of appropriateness Tuesday for work at his 1954 Cape that began as routine repairs and grew into a rebuild of the breezeway walls and a full re-roofing of the carport. Kern said he spent a year having replacement panels custom-built and hand-painted — roughly 50 hours of priming and painting — to match the originals' six-over-six interchangeable screen and storm inserts. The carport's clear Lexan roof will be replaced with architectural asphalt shingles on new framing supported by six-by-six posts, with three flat four-inch skylights. Vice Chair Margery F. Baston, who visited the site, said the carport is barely visible from Bow Road and that the work "has to be appropriate for the house and appropriate for the district." Chair Greg Dale, Baston, Lynn Cohen and alternate Gretchen Schuler voted in favor.
