Assessors approve $1.24 million CPA surcharge report
Board of Assessors · Meeting of September 14, 2026
Wayland assessors approve $1.24 million CPA surcharge report, push back on split tax rate idea. The Board of Assessors voted unanimously to accept the fiscal 2026 Community Preservation Act surcharge filing, showing $1,250,172.14 committed and a net surcharge of $1,244,276.85 after abatements. Members Steven Klitgord and Zachariah Ventress criticized a possible Economic Development Committee push for a split commercial-residential tax rate, with Klitgord warning the town "may actually lose some tax base as opposed to making more revenue" from local businesses.
The board also reviewed a $22,368 average assessment increase across 59 Wayland Affordable Housing parcels and discussed adding a cost-of-living adjustment to the town's roughly 50 veterans' property tax exemptions, estimated at about $1,000 a year townwide. The Select Board's classification hearing to set the fiscal 2027 tax rate is scheduled for November 16.
