Wayland water committee to seek nearly $8,000 for pond treatments
WAYLAND -- March 11, 2024, Wayland Surface Water Quality Committee will seek roughly $7,750 to keep pond weed-control work on track. Chair Thomas Klem told the March 11 remote meeting he would appear before the Select Board the same night to request $3,750 for a Solitude Lake Management contract to permit herbicide use in Heard Pond's south cove, and the release of $4,000 from the Dudley Pond Association gift account to settle billing on last year's ProcellaCOR milfoil treatment. Member Thomas J. Largy said roughly 32,000 water chestnuts were pulled at Heard Pond last season, well above the usual 1,000 to 3,000, calling herbicide necessary because "the herbicide only works if you have a lot of plants." Solitude treated 63 acres of Dudley Pond last spring against a 53.5-acre contract, then agreed to accept $3,500 for the extra 10 acres plus a $500 year-end report invoice. Members Klem, Largy and Carole Plumb attended; the Feb. 12 minutes were approved unanimously.
