Wayland Town Meeting approves $11 million senior center, $3 million Loker field

WAYLAND — May 17, 2022 — Wayland voters approve $11M senior center, $3M grass field, $4M housing bid in marathon session. Town Meeting backed Select Board Chair Tom Fay's long-stalled Council on Aging Community Center 230-71, with Fay calling current 772-square-foot quarters "frankly embarrassing." Voters cleared $3 million for a natural grass field at Loker by a 254-69 vote despite warnings from Tom Maglione of Rice Road about PFAS exceedances at the former tier 1A waste site. Community Preservation Committee Chair Gretchen Shuler won 268-31 approval to borrow up to $4 million against future CPA receipts to bid by Aug. 22 on 12 Army-owned affordable units at Launcher Way. In a striking reversal, voters rescinded a prior $450,000 Potter/Stones Bridge appropriation 255-34 after petitioner Tom Sciacca said the bridge "is entirely in Framingham." A moderator-sponsored Finance Committee appointment reform was referred for further study on a 144-100 vote.
