Wayland school finance panel plans August summit, presses for budget book overhaul

WAYLAND — April 24, 2024 — Wayland school finance subcommittee plans late-August financial summit with town boards. The School Committee's finance subcommittee met April 24 with two Finance Committee members and agreed to push for a joint summit the week of Aug. 19 or 26, reviving a practice Superintendent Susan Bottan called something she is "a huge proponent" of. Bottan said this year's budget Q&A swelled to roughly 60 pages — longer than the budget book itself — and agreed to add an executive summary, a Sudbury-style revenue chart, multi-year pro forma projections and a teacher salary comparison reflecting the new three-year Wayland Teachers Association contract. On capital, Bottan said the town's five-year plan is "etched in stone," blocking reprioritization of tile funding toward a postponed middle school boiler. The subcommittee meets May 3 at 8:30 a.m. to draft long-range building plan goals.
