Wayland Personnel Board upgrades library director position to grade N-11

WAYLAND — May 15, 2023 — Wayland reclassifies library director to N-11 ahead of June 30 retirement. The Personnel Board voted 4-0, with member Mary Ellen Castagno abstaining, to upgrade the position from N-10 to N-11, lifting the top of the salary range to roughly $134,022, and approved a revised job description 5-0. Board of Library Trustees Chair Ada Janis said "Wayland needs to be positioned to offer a competitive salary," citing at least 80 new library director hires statewide in two years. Personnel Manager Kate Ryan's survey showed the director supervises about 30 staff across 13 FTEs and a $1.2 million budget. The board also approved an administrative assessor hire at G-3, step 6 ($62,368), and capped most firefighter vacation carryovers at four days and four nights amid a department down seven members, including five on injury leave.
