Wayland Opens Cooling Stations as Extreme Heat Watch Takes Effect Wednesday
With an Extreme Heat Watch in effect from Wednesday through Friday and temperatures forecast to approach 100 degrees, the Town of Wayland is directing residents to two designated cooling locations and urging caution throughout the week.

An extreme heat event is bearing down on Greater Boston, and Wayland is responding with a pair of public cooling stations. The Wayland Public Library at 5 Concord Road and the Wayland Public Safety Building are both open to residents seeking relief. The town issued the alert Monday afternoon alongside a separate set of heat-safety tips, warning that temperatures could reach nearly 100 degrees over the next seven days.
Residents should also note that town offices will be closed Thursday, July 2, and Friday, July 3, in observance of Independence Day. The library itself will be closed July 3 through July 5.

The Wayland Museum & Historical Society's "Tracing Liberty" series continues this week with a public reading of Frederick Douglass's "What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?" on Tuesday, June 30, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Wayland Free Public Library. The event is free and open to all — a timely pairing of civic history and the holiday weekend ahead.
Looking further out, the Vokes Players open their summer production of Joe DiPietro's Over the River and Through the Woods on July 24 at Beatrice Herford's Vokes Theatre, 97 Boston Post Road. Directed by David Berti, the warm-hearted romantic comedy runs through August 8. The Wayland Free Public Library's summer reading program, "Plant a Seed, Read," is underway through the summer, and the library's July virtual author talk series is also open for registration online.
