Wayland extends synthetic turf moratorium, adopts MBTA-compliant zoning bylaw

WAYLAND — May 14, 2024 — Wayland Town Meeting adopts MBTA zoning and extends synthetic turf moratorium on contentious second night. Voters approved the multifamily housing overlay district 232-117 after rejecting, 108-247, a motion by Bill Steinberg of 9 Coltsway to refer the article to a fall special town meeting. Planning Board Chair Annette Lewis said the 50-acre district across four sub-districts could accommodate the 750 units required by state law. Select Board member Adam Gutbezahl warned a special town meeting would cost $30,000 to $50,000, calling delay "as good as denial." Town Meeting also extended the synthetic turf moratorium 235-128, adopted the state specialized energy code 134-28, and rejected 45-96 an Athletic Fields Planning Committee proposed by Dave Bernstein of Gleason Lane after Town Manager Michael McCall said it would duplicate a broader capital planning effort already underway.
