Wayland DPW board weighs curbside pickup as transfer station usage stalls

WAYLAND — March 19, 2024 — Wayland DPW board opens debate on the transfer station's future as participation flatlines. Acting chair Cliff Lewis presented seven options — from closure to town-contracted curbside pickup to a Sudbury collaboration — noting only about 1,500 of roughly 5,000 households buy stickers against an FY25 budget near $580,000. DPW Director Tom Holder said a comprehensive consultant study would run about $25,000 and that his Sudbury counterpart is "receptive" to talks. Member Sherry Greenbaum defended the facility as "part of the fabric of Wayland," while George Uveges countered that non-users effectively subsidize sticker holders. The board voted 5-0 to confirm billing town departments at posted rates for dump use and 5-0 to urge the town to deny permits to water-bill delinquents under bylaw 72.4. No vote was taken on the Town Meeting athletic-fields-committee article.
