Wayland DPW board doubles non-recyclable mattress fee to $50

WAYLAND — November 15, 2022 — Wayland Board of Public Works doubles mattress disposal fee and clears the way to lift drought restrictions. Meeting Nov. 15, the three-member board unanimously raised the transfer station's fee for non-recyclable mattresses and box springs from $25 to $50 to cover a new contractor charge, and authorized DPW Director Tom Holder and the water division to rescind the emergency water-use restriction after the state downgraded the region from severe to mild drought. Holder reported the Happy Hollow PFAS treatment system is producing "non-detect" water and that the $1.4 million emergency Hultman Aqueduct connection, funded with ARPA money, remains on track for a July 2023 activation. Holder is carrying roughly $110,000 in the FY24 capital plan to clear-cut trees and grind stumps on the old south landfill at Mass DEP's direction. Supervisor Joe reported the food-scrap composting program has cut about 45 tons of trash since April, and the town received a $5,400 DEP recycling rebate.
