Wayland Council on Aging hears community center on track for December opening

WAYLAND — February 12, 2024 — Wayland community center construction stays on track for December 2024 even as contingency shrinks. Vice Chair William Sterling told the Council on Aging Board on Feb. 12 that site work is underway, with topsoil excavated and underground utilities next in a three-week look-ahead. Frank Kennedy, reporting from the Jan. 30 Permanent Municipal Building Committee meeting, said a new monthly project report was "very, very well accepted" and shows completion in December, but the owner's project manager has requested roughly $250,000 more, cutting contingency funds from about $750,000 to $500,000. Crews also hit an unexpected concrete mass under the building. Director Julie Secord said taxi-to-Boston rides are running seven to nine a day, and repairs to a tree-damaged COA van jumped from a $5,000 appraisal to roughly $31,000. The board next meets in person at 5 p.m. March 11.
