Wayland Board of Health adopts revised animal-keeping rules after public hearing

WAYLAND — May 20, 2024 — Wayland Board of Health adopts revised animal-keeping rules and joins regional substance abuse coordinator pact. The board voted unanimously Monday to adopt regulations capping chicken-keeping at 12 birds on one-acre-plus lots and six on smaller lots, with 150-foot abutter notification in dense neighborhoods; member Genevieve Anand urged the board to "leave it to the staff's discretion" on coop sizing rather than write a square-footage standard. Members also approved an inter-municipal agreement adding Wayland to a seven-town regional substance abuse coordinator position, funded through the town's CTCI grant running through fiscal 2026. Health Director Julia Junghanns reported Stop & Shop has dropped tobacco sales, taking permit counts from 14 to 13, and that staff have begun refunding roughly $68,000 in long-dormant septic guaranteed-deposit accounts. Dr. Brett Mordas was welcomed as the board's newest member.
