Wayland awaits PFAS results to close Raytheon-era tank cleanup

WAYLAND — May 8, 2025 — Wayland's 8 Andrew Ave. cleanup hinges on a pending PFAS groundwater test due next week. Licensed site professional Ben Tymann of CMG told a public meeting Thursday that samples drawn April 28 from three new monitoring wells came back clean for petroleum and PCBs, but PFAS results are still out. If PFAS-6 falls below the state's 20-parts-per-trillion standard, the town will file a combined Release Abatement Measure Completion and Permanent Solution report under tracking number 3-50340; if not, it must tier-classify and file a Phase I investigation by June 12. The new tracking number stems from a 488-gallon concrete tank and clay drainpipe unearthed in January 2024 during community center construction; liquid inside exceeded 20 ppt PFAS. Roughly 4,880 cubic yards of excavated soil were sorted, with 1,350 reused on site and 1,130 moved to 22 Andrew Ave. Resident Mike Gittin warned, "We shouldn't assume it's just one point." Public comment runs through June 7; the community center opens June 5.
