Wayland HRDEIC finalizes Saturday peace event, approves minutes

WAYLAND — September 17, 2024 — Wayland's diversity committee finalizes Saturday peace event and welcomes its fourth student member. The Human Rights, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee, chaired by Karen Blumenfeld, locked in logistics Tuesday for a 4 p.m. International Day of Peace gathering on the town green featuring three short speakers, peace-wreath and Cheerio-bracelet crafts, and origami cranes. Member Asma Khan, who is leading the event, said speeches will run "three or four minutes" each; Malcolm Astley will address peace in relationships and home. The committee also began consolidating a 21-item draft goals list from members Yawu and Marianne — "we can't do 21," Vice Chair Heather said — and approved August 20 and September 4 minutes, with member Meilin Ellerman correcting a passage to clarify a new coercive-control amendment to Chapter 209A.
