Wayland HDC approves new mahogany door at Jonathan Maynard House

WAYLAND — March 14, 2023 — Wayland Historic District Commission unanimously backs grant letter and approves Jonathan Maynard House door replacement. Both items cleared 6-0 at the March 14 meeting, with Seema Mysore, Desmond McCauley, Margery F. Baston, Kathy Steinberg, Gretchen Schuler and Alice in favor. Schuler said the Wayland Historical Society's 50-percent match application to the Massachusetts Historical Commission would fund architectural drawings estimated at $10,000 to $12,000, a roughly $3,000 site plan and about $4,500 in structural engineering, at architect rates near $120 to $125 an hour. Contractor William Burns said restoring the cracked, mortise-and-tenon front door at 1 Bow Road would cost triple a replacement, and that John Moriarty of JP Millworks would build a dimensionally matching mahogany door. McCauley pressed for sustainably harvested wood and a Revit model the town would own, calling it "a living document."
