Wayland DPW board readies dual-source water case for Feb. 24 joint meeting

WAYLAND — February 12, 2025 — Wayland Board of Public Works sets dual-source water strategy and approves transfer station budget 3-1. The board on Feb. 12 prepared for a Feb. 24 joint meeting with the Select Board, where DPW Director Tom Holder will seek reinstatement of about $300,000 in design tasks for the Happy Hollow filtration plant and $1.23 million in FY26 capital to complete the design. Holder said PFAS found at 195 Main Street, within the Happy Hollow Zone 2, could trigger roughly $10 million in cleanup, but said abandoning the wells would not provide relief for "approximately 10 plus years." Construction estimates have risen to about $35 million for dual source versus $22 million for full MWRA, with Kleinfelder's Kirsten Ryan citing expanded treatment scope and volatile bid pricing. Member Michael Spelman dissented on a transfer station budget containing $58,000 from retained earnings for a curbside-pickup study, calling it unfair to rate payers.
