Wayland Conservation Commission sets March deadline for turf field cleanup

WAYLAND — October 9, 2024 — Wayland Conservation Commission sets end-of-March deadline for high school turf field cleanup. The commission on Oct. 9 told the School Committee, through Conservation Administrator Linda Hansen's draft compliance timeline, that it must identify and remove crumb rubber infill that has washed into the Sudbury River floodplain by spring or face retroactive fines and a possible order to replace the infill entirely. Resident Dave Bernstein told members there was "zero evidence" that perimeter catch-basin filters had solved the three-year-old overflow problem and urged reconsideration of a roughly $100,000 grit chamber. Bernstein disclosed that MassDEP this year added diisononyl phthalate — documented in the field's infill — to its toxic and hazardous materials list. Chair Sean P. Fair said the commission had given "way too many" chances; member Shannon Fischer pushed to replace the rubber pellets with walnut shells regardless. The commission also voted 7-0 to permit a seasonal floating dock at 45 Nolwood Lane for homeowner Matesha Ladawala.
