Recreation Commission endorses Select Board–led process for 195 Main Street

WAYLAND — March 28, 2025 — Wayland Recreation Commission backs Select Board control of 195 Main Street development. Commissioners voted unanimously March 28 to support a town-led RFP process to develop the parcel as either an indoor passive and active recreation facility or a rectangular grass field, taking a position on Articles 35 and 36 at spring town meeting. Chair Asa B. Foster pressed proponents to release a business model, saying "I want to know what their business plan is," while commissioner Mark Norton noted "there's no gym space available this winter." A Winchester Soccer Club representative briefed members on his club's $15 million public-private field house, which grosses roughly $2 million annually and rents prime indoor time near $1,000 an hour. The commission also voted 2-1 to defer a new per-day field surcharge for the Waco Amateur Sports Development League — whose fees would have jumped from $2,400 to $6,400 — and unanimously approved the Vendor Packet effective July 1.
