Consultants file Loker Field permanent solution with MassDEP

WAYLAND — September 13, 2023 — Wayland consultants say Loker Field poses no significant risk after on-site reuse of contaminated soil. At a Sept. 13 public involvement meeting, Weston & Sampson LSP Sean Healy reported that 720 cubic yards of soil containing PFAS, petroleum hydrocarbons and PAHs above RCS-1 standards were excavated and reused within a designated area on the recreation site, with no off-site disposal. Toxicologist Marie Rudiman said her MCP Method 3 analysis, using maximum detected concentrations, found "a condition of no significant risk under current and future unrestricted site use," with best management practices recommended for any future vegetable gardening. Resident Carol Plum challenged claims that no soils left the site, citing photos of runoff into adjacent conservation ponds during heavy rains. Practice leader Brandon Kunkel said additional erosion controls and riprap had been installed. Written comments are due Sept. 14.
